John Mayer - live in concert 2008
Someone told John Mayer that he’s “the guy who reinvented the blues.” But he humbly deflected the compliment, insisting that if anyone gets credit for reinventing the blues it would be his listeners (presumably by helping him figure out what we all want to hear)…
The point? This man, this artist, is no Jack Johnson (not that there’s anything wrong with Jack Johnson). More on my thoughts about his work later… or you can read my post from last fall.
I need to pack for BlogHer!

Have you ever started talking, then lecturing, then ranting to your kids and later regretted it? That’s what happened to me today.
Here’s the story.
My kids are learning to play tennis. I should probably mention that I love tennis. I’m disappointed by our country’s poor showing in Wimbledon right now (and disappointed by Ana Ivanovic’s loss).
Ana Ivanovic
I felt sad when Federer lost to Nadal (again) at the French Open. But I am hopeful that he’ll win Wimbledon.
More to the point, though, I’m aware of the emotional nature of the sport of tennis and the importance of maintaining control when you play . It’s a sport where it pays to be calm and assertive. Strong but controlled. Especially when the players are sensitive and intense (think McEnroe ).
Like my kids, for example.

Happy first anniversary to Kirtsy (formerly known as Sk*rt)!
If they didn’t have me at “Hello” they certainly had me when they asked readers to celebrate by eating cupcakes. This was my contribution:
Oh yeah…yummy chocolaty goodness.
But seriously, if you haven’t discovered Kirtsy , check it out now. It’s been described (by none other than genius-of-the-blogosphere and Alltop creator , Guy Kawasaki) as Digg for Chicks .
And if you’ve never used Digg …well, I’ll just say that if you’d like to find interesting articles about a variety of topics, use Alltop - especially if you’re relatively new to the blogosphere. Then, after you’ve read through the hottest articles there, go to Kirtsy or Digg and find even more. Personally, I prefer watching Diggnation rather than using Digg - it’s a “tech/web culture show” that reviews the top Digg articles on a weekly basis (note: the guys , Alex Albrecht and Kevin Rose , are a riot but the shows are not family friendly).
Happy Birthday, Kirtsy ! Here’s to many more years.

As I post these photos, I keep thinking: “My kids love to eat pizza and enjoy cooking. Why do I ever order out? Pizza has to be one of the easiest things to make…”

May 22nd, 2008 — Nintendo, children, culture, entertainment, family, fun, games, parenting, photos, thoughts
I’ve been Twittering about how much I wanted a WiiFit and guess what?! I have one!

Even better than that simple fact, though, is the story about how I managed to snag one of these treasured new Nintendo gems.
After a long, exhausting day entertaining 30 people at my home while a couple of sick kids sat in my playroom all day long, I remembered that this day was the day the game would be released for sale at all of our local game stores. Rats! I had been so caught up in my party that I forgot my plan — because I did not pre-order the game, I intended to go to the store when it opened to try to get one of the extra games. I had been advised by one of the game store guys that they usually get a couple extras (beyond the number of pre-orders). But I blew it. Forgot to go. By the time I remembered, I was not at all in the mood to go out and drive to the store (and I didn’t think I had much of a shot at getting one so late in the afternoon anyway).
